Biography

Fielding Garr was born 19 August 1794 in Madison County, Virginia, United States to Abraham Garr (1769-1861) and Dinah Weaver (1768-1834) and died 15 June 1855 Antelope Island, Davis County, Utah, United States of unspecified causes. He married Paulina Turner (1805-1844) 18 November 1819 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana.

Fielding Garr moved from Virginia to Kentucky with his family when he was eleven.

When he was was thirteen they moved again to Wayne County, Indiana.

He was eighteen when the United States declared war against Great Britain in June of 1812. He served a two-month enlistment from May 18th-July 18th of 1813 as a private in the Indiana militia defending settlements against Indian raids encouraged by the British.

Antelope Island Ranch

He was with Lot Smith (1830-1892) and Heber Chase Kimball (1801-1868) riding at the north end of what is now Antelope Island when they unexpectedly came across a herd of antelope. From this, the island received its name.

Fielding was put in charge of the church’s tithing cattle in about 1854 and with his family lived at what is called the Garr ranch on Antelope Island.
