George Washington's November 29, 1777 General Orders contained the following mention of Daniel Messerly:
- "Col. Spencer is appointed president, and Major Bayard and a Captain of Col. Lee's regiment members, of a Court of enquiry to sit to morrow morning at ten o'clock, at the president's quarters to inquire into the conduct of Lieut. Reynolds of Col. Malcom's regt: for "Abusing Daniel Messerly Esqr. and other persons on the 2nd. of last August," as exhibited in their depositions."

- Searching for Daniel messerly on Rootsweb.org, Daniel is found to be executor on a German will, indicating he is trustworthy (if not fluent) in reading German.
Speculation[]
- The earliest Swiss immigrants during the 17th and early 18th century were largely Dutch Mennonites. If Daniel's family was Mennonite, this would help explain why the swiss name Messerly appeared in the Netherlands (there is only one record of Messerly birth in this period). Persecution in the previous century pushed Mennonites to the Netherlands. [3]
