Aleksandrov or Alexandrov (Russian: Александров, IPA: [ɐlʲɪˈksandrəf]) is a town and the administrative center of Aleksandrov Rayon of Vladimir Oblast, Russia, located 120 kilometers (75 mi) northeast of Moscow. Population: 61,551 (2010 Census);[1] 64,824 (2002 Census);[4] 68,220 (1989 Census).[5]
Alexandrovskaya Sloboda (the former name of the settlement) served as the capital of Russia for three months (December 1564 to February 1565) under Tsar Ivan the Terrible until he agreed to return his court and the relics of Moscow which he had taken with him. Ivan agreed to return after the church gave him permission to found the Oprichnina.
It was granted town status in 1778.
