Categories[]

For several years now, we have had categories headed "Resided in" - for localities, counties, states, and nations.

Sometimes all that we know about a person, apart from parentage and children, is that he or she lived in a certain place, with information often from census or directory listings or newspaper articles and obituaries.

It doesn't include "Born in" or "Married in" - they can happen without residence. And it's not the same as Wikipedia's "People from", which can include a wide range of associations starting with birth (and should exclude people who may have resided in a place but would object to being regarded as "from" it), though we can copy Wikipedia pages using that phrase and add our own spin to them.

We need not restrict "Resided in" to categories. There can be a corresponding article, listing people who don't have their own articles yet - in the same way as we do in surname articles. We can also have Concepts - which will be helped along when we develop Template:Showfacts residences.

I hope nobody will try to merge "Resided in" with "People from". It would destroy a genealogically useful distinction. Link from one to the other but don't blur the distinctions by merging.

Residences semantically[]

Some time ago I wrote some ideas at Familypedia:Residences_template, discussing the aforementioned Template:Showfacts residences. I would like our two or three SMW experts to read through it and offer opinions about how practicable the idea is. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 05:38, October 13, 2014 (UTC)

Not much enthusiasm shown yet. I've just expanded Familypedia:Residences template and I hope someone (not necessarily an expert in SMW) will be inspired to start some coding or to point out why we should not try. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 01:20, November 6, 2015 (UTC)

Tinkering with code. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 09:03, April 27, 2018 (UTC)
