I created Wiliam Cheney (1717-1775) and his son Thomas Cheney (1760-1833). Upon creating Thomas, the link to his father William worked fine. However, when I was on William's page and went to his children, Thomas's name was not a hotlink. Thanks to Thurston for his edits and he made it a hotlink. How do I do that myself?
- You created Thomas's page with the name "Thomas Cheney (1742–1828)" (with an en dash) and then tried to link to it as "Thomas Cheney (1742-1828)" (with a hyphen). Pagenames for "Person pages" must use hyphens, not em-dashes or en-dashes. Thurstan (talk) 21:50, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you Thurston, And you gave me a bit of a grammar lesson. Lol! I previously did not know the difference between a dash and a hypen, and I am fairly knowledgeable about grammar. I had researched it and learned that the symbol on your phone keyboard is a hypen, unless you long press it to choose a dash. It must have happened when I was copy and pasting his name and life span.
Thank you once again!
Another question. I saw where you placed Thomas Cheney's life dates and spouse in the table where they should be. I could not figure out how to so that on the create a page form. How can I do that?
- No, I didn't change Thomas Cheney's page: once Wiliam Cheney's page can link to Thomas's page, Thomas's details are read from his page into the "children" table of William's page. Your adding "|Birth year=1776|Death year=1810" to the {{showfacts children}} template on Thomas's page will have no effect, so you shouldn't bother. If you want the dates, places and spouse(s) for Permelia to show on Thomas's page, you have to create her page (properly named to match the link on Thomas's page). I created Permelia Cheney (1776-1810). That title was an error. It should read Permelia Cheney (1767-1810). How do I change that? I can't seem to figure that out.
- The function for renaming a page is called "move": it is on the drop-down menu that you get by clicking the three vertical dots immediately to the right of the "EDIT WITH FORM" at the top right of the page. Thurstan (talk) 06:23, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
And I have yet to see her daughter Keturah Tucker (1800-1829) show up on Permelia's page. I am pretty confident I added her when I originally created Permelia's page. Please help.
- There is no link on Permelia's page: when you fix the "mismatched brackets" error, you may be able to add her. Thurstan (talk) 06:23, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
Okay, I am so confused! Lol! Please take a look at Permelia Cheney (1767-1810) and see if you can figure out why you cannot link from her to her daughter that I created: Keturah Tucker (1800-1829). In addition, why does she only show up on Permelia's page under siblings and is not a hot link? I am trying my best, but editing a person page is difficult and confusing, even for experienced computer users and amature genealogists. Lol!
Hello Thurstan, Sorry to bother you again. However, just as I thought I was getting the hang of creating a new person page, I run into another problem. I thought I had completed Charles William Anderson (1877-1917) and his link to his mother Mary Jane Linville (1849-1918) correctly. Instead, when I went to Mary Jane's page I noticed that Charles' link as her child was still red. When I clicked on his link it took me to his create/edit page. Now, while on that page I clicked on the x at the top of the page it then took me to his person page that looked great. Please help BrandonWDoom1976
- It looks okay to me now. You have to tell the system that you have made a change on another page that affects this page. Under the drop-down menu (beside the "edit" button) you will find "Purge", which forces a renewal of the page image in the cache: you can use this if "refresh" does not change the display as you expect.
Thank you Thurstan! That worked! BrandonWDoom1976
