Forums: Index > Watercooler > Competing cat structures commons vs wp
There are some conflicts between Wikipedia category structure and Commons. I propose that Image content (and related templates) use Commons cat structure, and textual content (eg:copied content from WP articles) use en:WP cat structure. Of course we can tweak things as we go along, but cat redirects don't work like Page redirects, necessitating bot runs to actually reCat articles.
- (On images, I agree with that. But text may be mixed: we have already moved - with your vigorous encouragement - to use the more logical Commons names for place-related cats, e.g. People from the United States. Robin Patterson 02:43, 28 October 2007 (UTC))
If functionally identical names and structure conform to neither, then we should have a good reason why. It creates a lot of needless busy work if we create cat structures different from commons and WP for reasons that are less than vital to the interests of the genealogy wikia. ~ Phlox 17:40, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
- OK, sounds good in principle: let's list for discussion any we discover or have already discovered. Robin Patterson 02:43, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Cats that don't conform[]
- Category:Copyright/Category:Copyright tags and commons copy: Category:License tags They overlap. (Commons for whatever reason uses "License" for all of their templates.
- Category:Settlements and category:Municipalities (I copied the commons municipalities, but it seems underpopulated, and besides settlements seems better- more general, covering very small entities like villages that one wouldn't consider municipalities.) ~ Phlox 03:23, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
