Red link remains[]

Sure here's the thing; I'll follow the red link of a parent and create a page for them, then I go back to the page of they're child, and the text is still red, and I have to go back into the edit form and rewrite the parent's name before the link is fixed. Is there anyway to avoid this inconvenience? -- BlakeShelton93 (Talk2:41, December 12 2015 (CST)

This is a standard problem with a wiki: the software doesn't know that the red-link has been created. Years ago the software displayed a "purge" button, which forced a re-computation of the page. That function still exists: I invoke it by displaying the page "history" (which is on "My Tools" at the foot of the page, and on the drop-down menu under "Edit with form") which goes to a URL like "http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Anna_Kochx_%281925-%29?action=history". I then go to my browsers address line and overwrite "history" with "purge", to get a URL like "http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Anna_Kochx_%281925-%29?action=purge". If you then hit "enter", the page will be recalculated. I think most of our contributors prefer the "null edit": choose "Edit" from the "Edit with form" drop-down, and then hit the "Publish" button without changing anything (this also works from the form, but this is quicker). The software recognizes that no change has been made to the page, so doesn't store a new version, but it does re-compute the page image, the link maps, the category maps and so on, so this function is often useful. Another of Thurstan's (typical) excellent answers! I might just add that I use the "Edit then Publish" for that sort of situation. Chances are that you'll want to "purge" the child's page sooner or later anyway if you haven't yet created tree and descendant subpages. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 11:21, December 14, 2015 (UTC)

New quirk - no names filled in[]

Today the system seems to have decided not to fill in the expected fields. The address bar looks right - http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Special:FormEdit/person/Jane_Drew_(c1838-1907)?Showfacts_children%255Bchildren-g1%255D=Walford%20Unwin%20(1876-1953)&Showfacts_person%255Bjoined_with%255D=Branston%20Unwin%20(1838-1897)&Showfacts_person%255Bsex%255D=F&Showfacts_person%255Bsurname%255D=Drew&Showfacts_person%255Bgiven_name%255D=Jane&flow=create-page-article-redlink - but there are no names or sex filled in. Has this been noticed by others? -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 21:21, October 16, 2016 (UTC)

It worked a few weeks ago, but not now. I think it is an "Ask Wikia" problem. The "flow=create-page-article-redlink" parameter on the end is new (and not supplied by us), so I think some more processing has been added to the software, which breaks the parameters being passed to Special:FormEdit. We noticed recently that this problem has been fixed. Thurstan (talk) 05:33, January 14, 2019 (UTC)
