I'm frequently getting unresponsive scripts. They are introduced with the standard message:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

I'm not sure if it's the same each time. This is the latest:

Script: http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.8.2/jquery.min.js:2

Same! -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 22:52, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

I haven't seen it at all: do you have the ads turned on?
See https://developers.google.com/speed/libraries/devguide for "what it is". I don't know why we are getting it. Is this when you save an edit, or view a page? I can see where it is defined in the page source, but not where it is used. Thurstan (talk) 23:22, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

I do have the ads on. It's usually when I'm creating a new person page and typing or pasting parents. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 23:29, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

Then maybe it is the "autocomplete" trying to find names to offer you. Thurstan (talk) 23:55, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
If you are not using the "autocomplete", try turning off javascript. Thurstan (talk) 00:37, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

Problem located[]

I think you've got it, as I had concluded before seeing your latest edit. When I type "Thom" into the "Father" box then pause for a millisecond or two I get what's probably tens of thousands of helpful suggestions all containing "Thom" somewhere (not just at the start). I've now checked the "Don't ask me again" option and will see what happens. Autocomplete is very useful at that point when one is creating a page for someone whose parent already has a page. But it's not helpful if it can offer a million options and virtually crash in the process. Maybe we can get the autocomplete to wait until we typa a space, at least. -- Robin Patterson (Talk) 01:42, January 13, 2013 (UTC)

Yep. Despite my asking not to be asked, Windows Vista has asked me again. As soon as I started typing the mother's name the system grabbed every page that contains "R". AutocompleteParent.

Solutions[]

  1. Require everyone to paste instead of typing parent and spouse names - at least the first word. Type it in an unused box such as AFN# first if you haven't anywhere else to copy it from.
  2. Disable autocomplete for those troublesome fields. Far from the best solution because it's very useful in helping people get a name right if it already exists
  3. Find some way to get autocomplete to wait until several, e.g. three or more, characters have been typed in.
