Biography

Francis Andrews probably immigrated to New England in the 1630's. He was in Hartford in 1639 and an early member of the First Church. He married Anna Smith, daughter of John Smith, in Hartford. He purchased the north part of Richard Butler's lot on the corner of Elm St. & Trinity St. His name is on the Founder's Monument in the Ancient Burying Ground at Hartford.

Around 1648, he removed to Fairfield where he lived until his death. His will written June 6, 1662 and proved March 5, 1662/3 names sons: John, Thomas, & Jeremiah, and daughters: Elizabeth, Mary, Hester, Rebecca & Ruth. (from "Families of Early Hartford, Conn.")

The original brownstone monument erected in 1837 was replaced by this one in 1986, by the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford. It stands in the Ancient Burying Ground, which is located to the rear of the First Congregational Church at the corner of Main and Gold Streets in Hartford. This cemetery is also known as Old Center Cemetery. It lists the original Founders of Hartford.

Information on the Francis Andrews and Anna Smith ancestry comes from John V. Beck's "Elisha and Lavina (Locke) Andrus, Their Ancestors and Descendants, p.35 through the LDS. Francis Andrews, immigrant ancestor, was born in England and settled in 1639, in Hartford, Connecticut. His home was at what is now the corner of Elm and Trinity streets. He removed to Fairfield, and died there 1662-3. His will was dated June 16, 1662, proved March 5, 1663. Children:

Francis made his will 6 January 1662. It was proved 5 March 1662/3. [3][1][2]

To "son Thomas 5 acres of land at Bankside and a piece of land in his home lot to set a house upon; a gun barrel and stock."[2] "To son John, 3 acres of the lower end of his home lot and a piece of land 4 rods wide with a house upon it, provided he allowed his mother the use of another as good, 3 acres of meadow called the heather-bite and a gun."[2] "To son Jeremiah, a rapier and a staff, and 20s."[2] Abraham received 20s.[2] Daughters Mary, Hester, Rebecca and Ruth 10 s. each when 18 years of age.[2] "To John Crampton, husband of daughter Hannah, 3 roods of lands in his homelot next his house, provided he fence it all around with a five-rail fence."[2] "To granddaughter Hannah Cramton, 10 s.," [2] "To his wife Anna, house, land and remainder of his estate."[2] Children CHILDREN named in the 1662 will of Francis.[5] HANNAH, m.
