Francis was the last of the direct line of the Thorntons of Fall Hill plantation in Fredericksburg. The place of his death was a resort that attracted wealthy Virginians in the early 19th century and continues to exist today as The Greenbrier. It is in West Virginia now as that state separated from the rest of Virginia in the Civil War. I also know he was a prominent local citizen and was appointed Justice of the Peace for Spotsylvania County in 1790. I have more details in my mother's files.
