In 1848 at the age of 20 he arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, aboard the "Farforshire" from London and Plymouth.
He married (1) Maria Everson in 1855 in Adelaide South Australia, daughter of Joseph Everson and Lucy Shearman. Maria had arrived in Port Adelaide on 3 December 1854 as a single female immigrant at the age of 21 aboard "The Lord of the Isles"
He married (2) Caroline Mason in 1884 at St Matthews, Kensington, South Australia, 2nd daughter of John Mason and Susan Templar. Caroline Mason was the sister of his son Frederick Richard Steed Jnr's 1st wife Susan Gascoine Mason.
