Biography
Gardiner Greene Hubbard was born 25 August 1822 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States to Samuel Hubbard (1785-1847) and Mary Ann Greene (1790-1827) and died 11 December 1897 Washington, D.C., United States of unspecified causes. He married Gertrude Mercer McCurdy (1827-1909) 21 October 1846 in Auburn, Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States.
He was a founder and first president of the National Geographic Society; a founder and the first president of the Bell Telephone Company; a founder of the journal Science, and an advocate of oral speech education for the deaf.
