George Ambrose was born February 1843 in County Cork, Republic of Ireland and died 26 February 1934 Ferrisburgh, Addison County, Vermont, United States of unspecified causes. He married Maria Schmitt (1844-1910) .


According to family stories, George Ambrose's parents actually came from England, although he was born in County Cork, Ireland. Family members also say that he came to Canada with the British Army and decided to stay on, eventually making his way from Montreal to Vermont.

George Ambrose moved to Canada by 1866 because he married Maria Schmitt by that year. Their first son, George Matthaus Andreas Ambrose, was baptized at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montreal in July of 1866. George entered the United States sometime in 1867 and was naturalized as a United States citizen on July 4, 1878, in Vergennes City Court, Vergennes, Vermont.

Life and work

George Ambrose made harnesses, boots, and shoes for a living.

Family folklore indicates that Ambrose took part in the Fenian Raids, attacks by Irish Americans on the British in Canada. He reportedly fought against the Fenians as a British soldier.
