He married Phebe Leete (1585-1642) 29 March 1610 in Ipswich St Mary at the Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He married Susanna Simpson (1610-1691) 1643 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Biography

George Parkhurst, Sr. migrated from England to Massachusetts, settling at Watertown, Massachusetts. However he returned on frequent business trips to England and died there eventually.

George1 Parkhurst is seen in Massachusetts about 1635, and was a proprietor at Watertown in 1642, when it was ordered that a highway should be laid out by his house. He was made freeman there 10 May 1643, in Boston MA in 1645, and apparently returned to England after selling his last piece of real estate for twenty-one pounds on 13 June 1655, this being the last record of him in New England.

He stated, when obtaining the Court's permission to sell this last twelve acres of what had been John Simson's land, that his wife was in England and that their children there were in desperate condition. She had returned to England with six of her children, but found her mother, brothers and sisters were unable to do what she expected (and one wonders exactly what that might have been), and George desired to sell the land in order that he might go to the aid of his wife.

Ruth (Leete) Dalton, Phebe (Leete) Parkhurst's sister, died in New Hampshire in 1641 without surviving children, and left legacies to six Parkhurst children, suggesting that Phebe's children Samuel, John and Abigail had died young. (Torrey 560 and 675).

Watertown Founders Monument

He is listed on Watertown Founders Monument, commemorating the first settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts. The town was first known as Saltonstall Plantation, one of the earliest of the Massachusetts Bay Colony settlements. Founded in early 1630 by a group of settlers led by Richard Saltonstall and George Phillips, it was officially incorporated that same year. The alternate spelling "Waterton" is seen in some early documents.
