The origins of George Potter of Portsmouth, Rhode Island are unknown (Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Directory: Immigrants to New England, 1620–1640 [Boston: New England Historical and Genealogical Society, 2015], 270).
George POTTER, Jr. (LWL3-9GV), immigrated from England to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and arrived before September of 1638. On 6 December 1638, at the Island of Aquidneck, George was admitted as an inhabitant (Rhode Island).
1637 Portsmouth Compact

His brothers were signatories of the 1637 Portsmouth Civil Compact founding Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the 2nd settlement in the new colony of Rhode Island. This group, most of were caught up in the events of the Antinomian Controversy from 1636 to 1638, had followed the family of dissident preacher Anne Hutchinson and her family from Massachusetts Bay Colony seeking religious freedom. This document was the first compact to declare both political and religious separation.
Marriage and Family
George only had one son, Abel. George did not have any other children. His widow remarried to Nicholas Nyle and Abel's step-father placed him with William Baulstone for 18 years---he was not bound or apprenticed.
George died by 7 September 1640 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island. He died under strange circumstances because on 7 September 1640, eight men were appointed to look into the cause of his death. No further mention was made of this inquiry.
