Obituary
Death called for Mr George Boon, one-time champion buckjump rider and a well-known stockman, at an early hour — only 65 years had been ticked off when "Time" was called. It was only a few months ago that Mr Boon left Gundagai—he said he was going away to the city to end his days in ease. But he stayed only a short while there — the call of the gum-scented country was too strong. So Mr Boon packed up and steered for Cowra, and it was there, that diabetes from which he had suffered for a long time) got the upper hand, death taking place on Saturday last.
Deceased was born at Big Ben, South Gundagai, being the eldest son of the late Mr Nathaniel Boon, of that place. When quiet young his mother died, and young Boon was adopted by the late Mr George and Mrs Woodbridge, of South Gundagai, with whom he lived up till the time of his marriage with Miss S. Jones, daughter of the late Mr Tom Jones, of Tarrabandra. Most of the rest of his life was spent there and at Wagra, and his family were all born and reared in the vicinity of Tarrabandra.
In his young days Mr Boon could sit a buckjumper with the best of them, and was regarded as one of the best rough riders of the district. On a few occasions he acted as clerk of the course for Gundagai Race Club, and was a good worker for the P. and A. Society on show days.
A widow, two daughters (Mrs D. Withers, South Gundagai, and Mrs A. Naughton, Wagra) are left behind, as well as 11 sons Messrs Herb., P.W., Thos., James, Bert., Reg., Fred, George, Paddy, Jack and "Curly." Three sisters also survive — Mrs Sid. Crain and Mrs Job Smith, South Gundagai; and Mrs. Diver, of Queensland, Mrs Jenkins, the 100-year old ex-Gundagaite, now resident at Epping, was deceased's aunt, and Mr Alf. Boon, who died last year, was a brother.
The remains were brought to Gundagai by train this morning, and the interment took place in the C.E. cemetery at South Gundagai.
