Obituaries
On the 15th instant Mr George Thomas Buttsworth passed away at Wilberforce, where he had lived the whole of his long life of 80 years, having been born there when Wilberforce was a far less populous place than it is to-day. Deceased lived in the big red brick house near what is known as Buttsworth's mill, and had a good deal to do with the early history and progress of the Hawkesbury.
He was one of the old school of sturdy Hawkesburyites—a typical cornstalk—and throughout life was an industrious man. He and his family were very highly respected. His wife died about four years ago, and among his family are Mrs John Bennett, of Ebenezer, and Messrs. Norman and Horace Buttsworth. The interment took place on the 17th instant, when a very long cortege followed the remains to St. Matthew's Church of England cemetery, Windsor. Rev. N. Jenkyn carried out the burial service and Mr A. H. Johnson was the undertaker.
The late Mr G. T. Buttsworth, whose death was referred to last week, was born in the house where he died—the big red brick place near Buttsworth's mill, Wilberforce. He lived there all his life, going away on the roads sometimes. He was a notable carrier in the 'fifties,' and about 1856 was one of a party of 15 who took the first teams to Bourke from Sydney. The trip occupied 12 months. The late Mr Buttsworth's family were Mrs Bennett (Violet) wife of Mr John Bennett, J.P., of Ebenezer ; Georgina (who lived with her father) ; Mrs William Salter (Ida) ; Mrs Donnelly (wife of the well-known boat builder of North Sydney) ; Norman (in the railway department ; and Stanley, at home. The old mill at Wilberforce, one of the landmarks on the river, was owned and erected by decceased's late father, Henry Buttsworth, and it subsequently fell to William and James, brothers of the subject of this notice. It was the first steam flour mill erected in the Hawkesbury district, and was a scene of busy activity in the old milling days.
The late George Buttsworth was 80 years of age, and being always a provident and industrious man, amassed a very comfortable competency.
