Obituary
The death occurred on Monday night, at his home at Sassafras, of Mr. George Underwood Alley, J.P., at the patriarchal age of over 90 years.
The old gentleman was for many years an active figure in the public life of this district. In his younger days he was a keen sportsman, a good cricketer and an athlete. For some years he was a councillor of Clyde Shire, representing A. Riding. He held large landed interests at Sassafras, and in dry spells grazed many cattle from the back country. He reared a large family, and at his hospitable home visitors always received a hearty welcome. A quarter of a century ago he frequently sat on the Bench in Nowra, assisting in the administration of justice. In the early days of the Shoalhaven A. and H. Association he acted as a committee-man for some time, and was a large exhibitor at the annual shows. He was a wonderfully active man, of fine physique, and carried himself well up till quite recently, when advancing years told their tale. His wife predeceased him some years ago, and members of his family are resident in various parts of this and adjoining districts. The deceased gentleman was born at Jamberoo, coming to Shoalhaven when quite a lad with his father, the late Dr. Alley. The family resided for some years on Pig Island. For upwards of half a century Mr. G. U. Alley resided at Sassafras. He was a man held in high esteem. The funeral will take place to-day, the mortal remains being interred in a private cemetery on the "Ocean View" estate, where other members of the family have their last resting place.
