Biography
Col. George Washington Adair was born 1 March 1823 in Morgan County, Georgia, United States to John Fisher Adair (1785-1856) and Mary Radval Slaven (1790-1835) and died 29 September 1899 Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, United States of unspecified causes. He married Mary Jane Perry (1832-1936) 7 January 1854 in Newton County, Georgia, United States.
Col. Adair was an Ulster-Scot. His great-great-grandfather Joseph Adair came from Ireland about 1730 and settled in Laurens Co., SC. His father John Fisher Adair, a wheelwright, moved to Georgia, living first in Morgan Co. In 1825, when George was two, his family moved to DeKalb Co. His mother, whose maiden name was Slavin, died there in 1835.
Throughout his life, Col. Adair worked in a variety of businesses: He started out as a store clerk. He attended Decatur Academy, studied law, and was admitted to the bar. He was involved in newspapers and the railroad. He ran for political office. It was in real estate where he made his fortune. An expert auctioneer, Col. Adair sold more property than anyone else of that day, and he is credited as one of Atlanta's builders. As for the War, Col. Adair initially opposed the South's secession. When it occurred however, he joined the Confederate cause, becoming an aide-de-camp for General Nathan Bedford Forrest.
When he died, Col. George W. Adair left behind a wife, Mary Jane (maiden name Perry) who died in September 1910, and six children: Mrs. G. A. Howell, Mr. Forrest Adair, Mrs. Marshall Eckford, Mr. George W. Adair, Jr., Mr. Jack Adair, and Mrs. W. E. Foster.
Personal life
Adair married Mary Jane Perry 7 Jun 1854, in Newton County, Georgia.[1][2][3] Adair died at the age of 76,[4] leaving his wife, and six children: Jack, Forrest, George, Sallie, Annie and Mary.
Adair was first cousin to Green B. Adair, another Atlanta real estate developer.
