As relayed to me by Gerri Lipthratt, per his death certificate, George W. Potter was the son of Elijah Potter and Sarah Jane Follis. He was born in Marion Co., Illinois. According to family tradition, apparently he was an orphan (parents unaccounted for after 1873) and he was raised by his uncle, said to be named Jerry Potter, until he was about 17 (c. 1880), at which point he ran away from home. He would soon join a traveling carnival where he was an acrobat and tight rope walker. He came to Georgia and stayed at age 21 (c. 1884), possibly due to the carnival breaking up there.

More sourcing and detail is necessary to bring this article up to date. Also confusing is George's 1st wife, Nettie Lane. She is supposed to have died in childbirth, but her son Grover Potter listed a Roxie C. Lane (b. c. 1856) as his mother in the 1920 census. However, it is settled in the 1900 census where she lists him as her adopted son. Nettie is perhaps her sister, another daughter of Thomas M. Lane and Julia Ann Bennett.
