Gerard Edgar Herring was born 1835 in Cromer, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom to Robert Herring (1797-1868) and Jessy Ann Lathom (1803-1883) and died 10 February 1915 "Bracondale", Gladesville, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Jane Wiseman (c1836-1873) 2 April 1862 in St. John's church, Darlinghurst, New South Wales, Australia. He married Caroline Estella de Lange (c1852-1935) 21 January 1879 in Christ Church, Gladesville, New South Wales, Australia.
He arrived in Sydney in February, 1853.

Obituary
The late Mr Gerard Edgar Herring whose funeral took place yesterday at Waverley, was aged 80 years and was born in England in 1835 vvhere he was educated. He came out to New South Wales at the age of 20, and in 1874 entered the newly-established Department of Mines as chief clerk; being in fact one of the first appointments made to the department. He was twice married and leaves a numerous family whose members are Mrs Morgan, Mrs Gall, Miss Clara Herring, Miss Nellie Herring and Mr G L Herring, the children of his first marriage; and Mrs Murray Prior, Mr Evan Herring, Captain F V Herring and Mr E D Herring, the children of his second marriage. Captain F V and E D Herring are now in Egypt with the Australian Expeditionary Forces. The late Mr Herring retired on a pension from the service in 1894, under the Superannuation Act having attained the position of Asslstant Under Secretary for Mines. He was prominently connected with the municipal affairs of Ryde and Gladesville for many years. His death occurred on Tuesday at his residence, Bracondale, Gladesville.
