Gheorghe (Guță) Popescu-Ciocănel was a graduate of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest (1897). He continued his studies at the École spéciale des Langues orientales (now Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales) of Paris, specializing in oriental languages and graduating in 1906. Returning to Romania he took a teaching position at the Muslim Seminary of Medgidia where he was active until 1916. After the start of the hostilities of World War I and the occupation of the Dobrogea by the Turkish and Bulgarian troops, Gheorghe Popescu-Ciocănel was taken prisoner.
After the war, he settled in his home town of Ploiești, where he was professor at the Saints Peter and Paul Lyceum until his death in 1929.
