Gilbert Brooks was born 1621 in England to Gilbert Brooke (1591-1633) and Dorothie Prestons (1595-) and died 30 June 1695 Bristol County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Elizabeth Simmons (1628-1687) 1644 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He married Sarah Redaway (1640-1717) 18 January 1687 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

Biography[]

Born about 1621 (aged 14 in 1635). Came to Plymouth Colony in 1635 on the Blessing," & first settled in Scituate. Moved to Marshfield by 1643, Scituate by 1646, & Rehoboth by 1662. Died 13 Jun 1695 (from inventory).

Almost certainly brother of WILLIAM BROOKS, who also sailed on the "Blessing," & who appears immediately before Gilbert on the 1643 list of men able to bear arms, at his admission to freemanship in 1658, & on the 1658 list of freeman. His early association with WILLIAM VASSALL may indicate that Gilbert Brooks was from Essex in England.

1635 Migration to America[]

He was a passenger on the English ship Blessing, which sailed from London in July, 1635, bound for New England. The ship arrived safe at Massachusetts Bay. Passenger list information was transcribed in the 19th century by Michael Tepper from records found in London, the Public Rolls Office, formerly at Carleton Ride.

  2. Married (2) in Rehoboth, 18 Jan 1687[/8], Sarah (Redway) Carpenter, daughter of James Redway & widow of Samuel Carpenter.
