Biography
Gilbert Kennedy, 2nd Earl of Cassilis was born 7 November 1485 in Cassilis House, Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom to David Kennedy, 1st Earl of Cassilis (1463-1513) and Agnes Borthwick (1465-1509) and died 22 December 1527 Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland, United Kingdom of unspecified causes. He married Isabel Campbell (1489-1529) 1504 JL in Scotland.
Gilbert Kennedy, 2nd Earl of Cassillis (died between 24 and 30 August 1527) was a Scottish nobleman, the son of David Kennedy, 1st Earl of Cassilis (1463-1513) and Agnes, daughter of William Borthwick, 3rd Lord Borthwick.
In August 1524 Margaret Tudor sent him to England with Adam Otterburn and Scot of Balwearie to negotiate peace, and a possible marriage for James V with Princess Mary.[1]
He was murdered at Prestwick by the followers of Hew Campbell of Loudon, sheriff of Ayr in August 1527, over a quarrel about the lands of Turnberry.[2]
Ancestry
Gilbert was a great-great-great grandson of King Robert III. In fact, he could trace his descent from kings Robert II, Robert Bruce, and other ancient kings of Scotland through at least a couple of lines. Likewise, she was descended in several ways from William the Conqueror, and consequently Hugh Capet and other French kings.
The pedigree included Edmund II “Ironside,” who ruled Saxon England and struck the deal with the Viking Canute. As a result, she ties in with Alfred the Great and all of the other ancient kings of England and Wessex.
There were even noble ties on Helen’s mother side, who was of the great clan Campbell. Such royal blood was considered extremely important in medieval nuptials.
