He married Emily Maria Mann (1854-1899) 28 April 1880 in St. John's Church, Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, United States. He married Florence Delaplaine (1849-1926) 1912 in Manhattan, New York County, New York, United States.
He served as Speaker of the New York State Assembly and a member of the United States House of Representatives.
