Hannah Compton was born 1 March 1804 in Powick, Worcestershire, England, United States to John Compton (1763-1841) and Phebe Tombs (1775-1850) and died 21 July 1884 Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah, United States of unspecified causes. She married Edmund Wattis (1798-1844) 12 July 1824 in St Giles without Cripplegate, London, Greater London, England, United Kingdom. She married Elam Cheney (1825-1912) 6 November 1845 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois, United States.
Hannah was an English convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who immigrated to America with her family, but while in Nauvoo her husband died, leaving her a widow with several young children (3 of her own and 1 stepchild from her husbands 1st marriage) to care for at a time when the church body was preparing for the big arduous journey to the Salt Lake Valley. That is when she married Elam Cheney (1825-1912), twenty years her junior.
On the long trip to Utah with the Jedidiah 1847 Pioneer Company, Hannah was several months pregnant with daughter Hannah Cheney (1847-1847) who died shortly after birth.
