Thirty-third President of the United States (1945–1953); as vice president, he succeeded to the office upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. During World War I he served as an artillery officer. He was county judge in Missouri and later became a United States Senator.

He married Elizabeth Virginia Wallace (1885-1982) 28 June 1919 .
