Obituary

Mr. Henry Baker.

Kempsey lost a fine old personality on Friday when Mr. Henry Baker passed away in the Macleay District Hospital. Born at Castlereagh, New South Wales, 87 years ago, deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Baker, of Burwood, and came to the Macleay with his parents as a boy, their first home being at East Kempsey on a property later known as Bennett's Orchard. On March 4, 1884 he was married to Miss Margaret Anne Ramsay, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William G. Ramsay, of Glenrock Plains. Mrs. Baker passed away on 25th July, 1928. Surviving sons are Hastings and Goulburn (West Kempsey), Austral (Paddington), Charlie (Kempsey), Laurie (Paddington), Ray (Newtown) and Gordon (Paddington.); while daughters are Mrs. G. Dell (Armidale) and Mrs. A. Clinch (West Kempsey).

One son, Arnold, predeceased him.

The late Mr. Baker was possessed of a serene temperament that remained unruffled no matter how difficult the circumstances, and this with his quiet, generous nature, noted integrity and industry, earned him the eminent regard of the elder generation of Kempsey folk. In his early days Harry Baker, as he was popularly known, worked on various road construction jobs and for very many years was a valued member of Kempsey Municipal Council Field Staff until his retirement. The funeral under conduct of Messrs Harry B. and Jos T. Walker, took place to West Kempsey Methodist Cemetery on Saturday, the Rev. W. Tredinnick officiating.
