Henry Russ (1889-1955) married Ivy Daisy Violet Hazel (1894-1962) in 1917. They were known to the family as Uncle Harry and Auntie Daisy. Henry who ran his Green Grocers shop in Downend, Bristol and used to get up at 4am every morning to buy fruit and vegetables for his store.
Claire, a relative of Henry Russ on the Stroud side of the family wrote:
"Dad remembers visiting Lil Hook in about 1945 in Swinford. Lil Hook (Elizabeth Janetta Matilda Russ born 1886) was a sister of Henry Russ (1889-1955) and she married Isaac Hook in 1909, Keynsham, Bristol.
Claire’s dad remembers that Lil Hook liked very strong tea. He also remembers her house had a stream running behind it with a weir further down which he was told to keep away from. There was also a greengage tree which belonged to Lil Hook that overhung the stream.
Some other names he remembers are Johnny Short who was often with Uncle Harry (Henry Russ 1889-1955) and someone called Graham. Johnny and Harry used to visit my great grandparents; Frank and Elsie Stroud in Brecon, Wales, and take Frank down the pub which apparently would wind Elsie up (annoy)!" Frank (the uncle of Henry Russ 1889-1955) and Elsie Stroud were Alfred Francis Stroud (1872-1963) and Elsie Marian Davis (1890-1978).
Arthur Russ, born 1925 immigrated to Australia. He apparently led a loose life and thought little of borrowing money but not paying it back. I briefly saw him in the late 1960’s when he visited his brother (Ernest Raymond Russ) at our home in Uley, Gloucestershire; his brother being my father. Arthur returned to Australia shortly afterwards not to be heard from again!
