Lone Burial Site

Son of Elizabeth Crowell (1726-1799) and Col. Hezekiah Doane(5), Elisha(4), Hezekiah(3), Ephraim(2), Deacon John Doane(1). Married July 1,1779, Betsey Holbrook (1758-).

Hezekiah died at the age of 24 and was buried in the small lot known as the "smallpox yard," which is in the Wellfeet side just over the Truro line. John B. Dyer, town clerk of Truro, MA visited the grave in 1909. "There is evidence of but one grave. I had been of the impression that there were more but only one is now visible and that one at resting place of Hezekiah Doane. The headstone reads: 1781, and the footstone 1782. The headstone is broken in three pieces, probably the mischief of some boy. It is a slate stone with cherub head, etc, and was a good one in its day. The footstone is broken in two peices. It is tradition here that Hezekiah died of some contagious disease." One child: Hezekiah. Taken from DFA Book.
