Hyrum Harrison Smith was born 16 March 1836 in Franklin, Warren County, Ohio to Daniel Smith (1791-1869) and Elizabeth Ogden (1799-1843) and died 14 June 1893 Saint John, Stafford County, Kansas of unspecified causes. He married Euphemia Mossman (1840-1915) 5 July 1857 in Franklin, Warren County, Ohio.
Biography
Civil War Experience
Hyrum Harrison Smith was a Union Veteran of the Civil war. His rank was Pvt. Company D. 46th Ohio Inf.; And, Pvt. and Sergeant Company F. 188th Ohio Inf.
He recounted that he had been taken captive by the enemy and escaped by swimming the Mississippi River and hiding in a chestnut grove. He was very frightened. He climbed a chestnut tree and at that moment he saw the enemy approaching. He stayed in the tree all night and was not discovered. On leaving the tree after the army had moved on he gathered two chestnuts, made a hole in them, and tied them together to keep as a memento. Gloria Smith Barnett has these two chestnuts ...
