Ida Frances Hunt Udall was born 8 March 1858 in Hamilton's Fort, Iron County, Utah, United States to John Hunt (1833-1917) and Lois Barnes Pratt (1837-1885) and died 26 April 1915 Hunt, Apache County, Arizona, United States of unspecified causes. She married David King Udall (1851-1938) 25 May 1882 in St. George, Washington County, Utah, United States.

Ida Fances Hunt was born on March 8, 1858 at Hamilton Fort (near Cedar City, Utah) in the back of a wagon to parents John Hunt and Lois Pratt. The family was on their way to Utah from San Bernardino, California. Ida grew up in Beaver, Utah. She kept books for Beaver Woolen Mills, sang in the choir, and held leading roles in socials and dramas in Beaver. She taught in the territorial school. The family moved to New Mexico where they hauled freight for the government for two years. Afterwards, the family settled in Snowflake, Arizona. Four years later, on May 26, 1882, Ida married David K. Udall in the St. George Temple. Since she was a plural wife, she spent much of her life between 1883-1892 living with relatives in Nephi, Utah and Snowflake to avoid the U.S. Marshall. She feared being forced to testify against her husband. They had six children: Pauline, Grover, John, Jesse, Gilbert and Don. Ida died on April 26, 1915. (Life sketch submitted by Rosemary B Hopkins 26 August 2013 as a note)

In 1882, Udall took a second wife, Ida Hunt, a granddaughter of Jefferson Hunt (1803-1879) and also through her mother Lois Barnes Pratt (1837-1885), of Addison Pratt. That same year the U.S. Congress passed the Edmunds Act to aid in the prosecution of polygamists. Udall was indicted on charges of unlawful cohabitation in 1884. He was never convicted, because his second wife lived in another town, and prosecutors could not locate Ida to compel her testimony against him.

  • Saints Vol II - beginning with chapter 32, does an in depth history of Ida Frances Hunt (1858-1915) as she goes enter marriage with Bishop David King Udall (1851-1938) and she goes into hiding so that she does not have to testify against him. A little bit of history of the Eastern Arizona Stake too.

Chapter 34 tells of the story of her first daughter while she was in hiding from the law and living with her husband's parents in Utah.
