Biography
His primary residence for most of his life was within 4 miles of his birthplace in Rehoboth, Massachusetts.
Revolutionary War Veteran
At age 16 he served for a short time in the Revolutionary Army diuring the British attack at Newport.
The Battle of Rhode Island, also known as the Battle of Quaker Hill and the Siege of Newport, took place on August 29, 1778. Continental Army and militia forces under the command of General John Sullivan were withdrawing to the northern part of Aquidneck Island after abandoning their siege of Newport, Rhode Island, when the British forces in Newport sortied, supported by recently arrived Royal Navy ships, and attacked the retreating Americans. The battle ended inconclusively, but the Continental forces afterward withdrew to the mainland, leaving Aquidneck Island in British hands.
Early Residence
After his marriage 1782 he lived with his grandfather, Mial Pierce (1693-1786) for two years, before returning to his father's homestead where he pursued farming for all of his life.
"He was industrious and economical, and though he had a large family was prosperous and well-to-do. He used to relate that when he was a boy there was not a vehicle of any kind in Rehoboth, except a few ox-carts, heavy, clumsy affairs. He often went to church in an oxcart, in which seats were arranged for the family. When he was eighteen he joined his father's church, but when he was twenty-five he was excoomunicated for attending a Universalist church.
