Isaac Hermans op den Graeff was born 28 February 1616 in Krefeld, Nordheim, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Herman op den Graeff (1585-1642) and Grietjen Pletjes (1588-1643) and died 17 January 1679 Krefeld, Nordheim, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany of unspecified causes. He married Margriet Peters (1620-1683) 1638 in Germany. He married Unknown (c1630-) 1656 .
Biography
Isaac op den Graeffs father was the leading figure of the Krefeld Mennonites and delegate to the Dordrecht Confession of Faith. The Op den Graeff family were originally Mennonites, and are believed to have come from nearby Aldekerk[1] in the Catholic Duchy of Julich about 1605 to avoid persecution. He was a member of the Krefeld Mennonite community, but turned to Quakerism during the 1670s. Isaac op den Graeff married to Margaret Peters Doerrs (Margaretha 'Grietgen' Doors) (1621–1683). The couple had the following children:
- Herman Isaacs op den Graeff (1642-1708), one of the Germantown founders, politician
- Derick Isaacs op den Graeff (1646-1697), one of the Germantown founders, politician, signer of the first organized religious protest against slavery in colonial America
- Abraham Isaacs op den Graeff (1649-1731), one of the Germantown founders, politician, signer of the first organized religious protest against slavery in colonial America
- Margaretha op den Graeff (* 1651)
- ,Jacob op den Graeff (* 1653)
- Adolphus op den Graeff (1653-1680), his son Frederick Opdengraff founded another US-branch of the family, the later called Updegrove
Coat of arms
There is a reference about the Op den Graeff glass paintings of Krefeld with a description of Herman op den Graeff's coat of arms was found in the estate of W. Niepoth (op den Graeff folder) in the archives of the city of Krefeld, who noted a letter dated November 17, 1935 from Richard Wolfferts to Dr Risler: Saw the Coat of Arms glass pane in the old museum: 'Herman op den Graeff und Grietgen syn housfrau' or the like. Coat of Arms - In the sign a silver swan in blue. Helmet decoration (I think): Swan growing.[2]
