Jacob Perkins was born 12 September 1624 in Hillmorton, Warwickshire, England to John Perkins (1583-1654) and Judith Elizabeth Gater (1588-1684) and died 27 January 1699 Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts of unspecified causes. He married Elizabeth Unknown Perkins (1632-1685) 1648 in Massachusetts.

Biography

Jacob, son of the original immigrant John Perkins, is mentioned in the book, "The Family of John Perkins of Ipswich, Mass: Complete in Three Parts". Jacob in mentioned first on page 18 of Part I.

There are a few obvious errors in the manuscript (it says he was married in 1848, which of course is impossible; I think he meant 1648) and that his first wife Elizabeth died in 1865 (probably 1685). An estimated birth year for Jacob is given as 1624 in England; exact place unknown, but the author believed the family to likely be from Newent in Gloucestershire. According to this same source, Jacob came with his mother and father aboard the ship Lyon, leaving from Bristol, England, Dec. 1, 1630, bound for Boston. [Jacob would have been about 6.]

The family lived in Boston for about two years, and Jacob's youngest sister, Lydia, was born there. The family moved to Ipswich in 1633. His father John was primarily a farmer, and had several grants of land. John died in 1654, leaving behind a will. A transcribed copy of John's will can be seen on page 5. He mentions son John, son Thomas, daughter Elizabeth Sargent, daughter Mary Bradbury, daughter Lidia Bennitt, and son Jacob. His wife Judith was executor of his will.

On page 18 of Part I we find: "He married first, Elizabeth _______; [footnote 7 says "Possibly the daughter of Matthew Whipple]; her father's name is not known...she died...he afterwards married for a second wife, Damaris Robinson, widow of Nathaniel Robinson, mariner, of Boston. She removed to Boston after the death of Jacob Perkins, and died there, leaving property by will to several children by her first husband. The date of her death was in 1716, and her age at that time was eighty years. At the time of his marriage with the widow Robinson he made a promise to support her during her life; later in life he gave all his property into the possession of his two sons, Jacob and Matthew, on condition that they support both himself and wife during their natural lives.
