Jaiswal or Jayswal or Jayaswal is a surname used by many Hindu communities including Kalwars, Jains and Rajputs. Jaiswals are mainly traders and deal in various commodities. In past, they excelled in the art of liquor making and were classified as Somavamshiya Sahatrarjun Kshatriya.

History

The origin of the Jaiswal community is not known, but it is speculated that their ancestors hailed from town Jais in Uttar Pradesh and came to known as Jaiswals. They are mostly found in North India including Agra, Delhi and Rajasthan. Because their hereditary occupation of distilling and selling liquor was considered degrading, the Kalwars were moved down from Kshatriya to Vaishya Varna in the traditional caste hierarchy of South Asia.

During the British rule, the Jaiswal took up a variety of occupations, including trade, agriculture, army service, government service, politics and law.
