According to an obituary from Harrison County, Ohio in 1903 for a James Borland (his son) it states: "His parents, James and Mary Borland, came to this part of the country (Ohio) from PA about the year 1822." James applied for land at the Steubenville Land Office on Jan. 15, 1818, for R6 T13 S10, #6971. This was the next section due north of brother Samuel's place. He moved to Ohio by 1820. In 1820 New Hagerstown was a part of One Leg Twp., Tuscarawas Co., OH. James Borland appears on page 169A & 170 in 1820 with 1 male 26-45 and 1 female 16-26 but no children yet. He is listed as being in the manufacturing trade. In the 1830 census, same place as 1820, on page 52, appears James Borland with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 20-30, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 5 and 1 female 20-30. It is possible his two youngest brothers, Andrew and David, were living with him. In 1833, James and Mary Borland payed taxes on a tract of land next to his brother John in Orange twp., Carroll co. at R6 T13 S28 the NE quarter and on a lot in New Hagerstown, Ohio, being Lot #31. Both these pieces of property were sold to James Forbes Sr on 6 Mar 1832, Carroll County Deed Book 5 page 259. In 1840 James appears in the census of Orange twp., Carroll co., OH. Sometime between 1843 and 1850, James moved his family to Monroe township, Harrison county, Ohio, where he is found in the 1850 census. It is not certain where James went (if anywhere) after burying his wife, Mary, in New Hagerstown in 1854. His children appear in the 1860 census of Monroe township, Harrison county, Ohio, without their parents. In a land transaction between his son James and a W.W. Chaney in 1866 it refers to James Borland Sr deceased (Carroll County Deed Book 21 page 406). James Borland died in the summer of 1858. The Cadiz Democratic Sentinel of 11 Aug 1858 has a notice about Samuel Borland being appointed Administrator of the estate of James Borland late of Harrison county, Ohio. &nbsp
