James Cootes or Reweti Kuti was born 14 March 1804 in Suffolk, England, United Kingdom to Thomas Cootes (c1780-) and Anne Unknown (c1780-) and died 1 May 1873 Otaki, Kapiti Coast District, Wellington Region, New Zealand of unspecified causes. He married Hara Unknown (-) 1854 in New Zealand.

James became a whaler, coming to New Zealand in his 20s and eventually having close relationships with at least three indigenous women, formally marrying at least one of them.
