According to a 20th-century family member:

"James moved from Lanark to Newfoundland 1832, planning to join brother and sisters in Pennsylvania, but married Janet (or Jessie?) REID, dau of David and Jessie, tenant farmers on 350-acre (140-ha) Brookfield Farm, Topsail Road.
"He got govt grant of land on Brookfield Rd, farmed 13 yr, then bought 100ac (40 ha) on Topsail Rd from David REID, naming it Gibson Dawn Farm. Many descendants used those names.
"He was one of first Elders of NFD Presbyterian Ch."

  • Newsteading is about 2 km north of Lanark. Daughter Marion and her husband and children were said to have stayed in the same house overnight on their journey from Peebles to their embarkation point on the way to New Zealand. Son William, in his emigration diary "Adieu Scotia", noted that it was the house his grandfather had been born in.
