James McElroy was born circa 15 April 1850 in County Armagh, Ireland and died 2 January 1918 Suva, 27 Hawthorne-parade, Haberfield, New South Wales, Australia of carcinoma of stomach. He married Catherine Desmond (1859-1941) 17 July 1877 in Congregational Mance, Olive St, West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.

He arrived in New South Wales in 1856 on the James Fernie from Ireland.
