OVERVIEW[]
James Moore grew up in modern Rockbridge County, on his parents farm near the confluence of Walkers and Hays Creek. He married Martha Poague daughter of ? Poague and Jane Somers, probably by 1767. The couple settled at Newell's Tavern, a few miles south of Natural Bridge, where Martha bore the first four of their nine children. In 1775 the family relocated to Abb's Valley in modern Tazewell County. Here an additional 5 children were born. In 1784 one of their sons, James Moore, Jr. was taken captive by Indians. Two years later, the same group of Indians returened and killed James Moore, Sr., and captured or killed Martha, and five of their remaining children. Martha, and several of the children were carried north, and either killed along the way, or at their final destination. Only one of the captured children, Mary, survived.
