Shown as "James Petterson" in the 1851 census of Kirkden. An elder in the parish church of Kirkden for over 50 years. Described in his obituary as the "last life-renter in Forfarshire". There is conflicting evidence about his birthplace and death place, but both were in the eastern half of Angus.

William married twice and left hundreds of descendants in South Canterbury and other parts of New Zealand. Elizabeth married John Cochrane and did the same as William, though her daughter Elizabeth Paterson Cochrane married Lanarkshire-born William Loudon in Canterbury and they started a dynasty in Yakima County, Washington Territory. David became a woollen mill manager in Otago, New Zealand, and left many descendants there and elsewhere. The other children who had children of their own seem to have had fewer and mostly stayed in Scotland.
