James Smith was born circa 1792 and died 24 February 1849 Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom of unspecified causes. He married Sarah Inkpen (1796-1858) 22 August 1819 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

James Smith was born c1789/1790. He was a brazier/tin plate worker. Now, James said in the 1841 census he was not born in Oxfordshire but he died by 1851 which was the first census to give birthplaces.

Doing a study of tin plate workers in Oxford in 1851, the ones not from Oxfordshire were from Bucks, London, Gloucestershire and one from Cornwall and one from Norfolk. It could be James Smith was from a neighbouring county to Oxfordshire and moved to Oxford for work.

One of the witnesses to his 1819 marriage was Andrew Carney, who was a metal turner. The other witness to James' 1819 marriage was Hannah Hawkes. Her father was Jonas Hawkes born in 1764 in Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire. He had a sister Eliz Hawkes who wed Joseph Smith in 1786 in Marsh Gibbon. A possible lead. However due to the common surname of Smith, it could be coincidence.

  • 1841 census in Oxford said he was not born in Oxfordshire. He died before the 1851 census so there is no real evidence as to where he originated. More research needs to be done, his occupation may hold some records, ie apprenticeships.
