Jannet Shand was born 10 February 1810 in Rhynie and Essie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, United Kingdom to Robert Shand (1779-1842) and Margaret Crombie (c1784-1851) and died 12 October 1880 "Dryburgh", Reids Flat, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. She married William Balgowan (c1808-1887) 28 January 1838 in Rhynie and Essie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.
Jannet was working as a dairy woman prior to her marriage.
Jannet and William had a son William during 1838 in Clatt.
They left Scotland 1 July 1840. She immigrated as a free person on the Royal Consort arriving on 9 Nov 1840 to Botany Bay, New South Wales. This was a bounty ship. (State Record Reel 1317.) The ship arrived in Sydney on the 9th of November 1840. It was chartered by the Australian Agricultural Company. It departed on 13th July 1840 from Port Phillip bound for Sydney. Its weight: 529 tons and the ship's master was John Western.
On 1 Jan 1859 they were living at or near Dryburgh. In 1865 they purchased the Dryburgh property from the Harper family. On April 26 1970, all the buildings were swept away in a great flood. A new house was built further from the river on a rise. This was the second time that such a flood had occurred.
Jannet died on the 12th of October 1880 at Dryburgh at the age of 70. Buried at their private cemetery on their property at Dryburgh near Fish River, New South Wales nowadays called Reids Flat, New South Wales on 14 Oct 1880.

- OBITUARY We regret to hear of the death, reported in another column, of Mrs Balgowan, wife of Mr William Balgowan, of Dryburgh, Fish River, which occurred on the 12th October, after a painful illness of eight weeks. The deceased was a very old resident in the neighbourhood where she and her husband had brought up a worthy and intelligent family, and her death is sure to be deeply regretted.
