Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas Angell by Avery F. Angell p. 24

All of his children were by his first wife. He did not own property in Providence. He is described as a small, short man. He had 3 wives, all who were his height. He was the successor of his father's farmland and proprieter of the celebrated Angell Tavern of South Scituate. He was an active business man, and cleared land and planted orchards and made other improvements on his land. One orchard provided fruit for five generations and some trees were bearing fruit in 1860. He made good use of early opportunities for gaining knowledge.

He acquired condiderable knowledge of Law and rendered important service to his townsman as legal advisor. He was many years Justice of the Peace and in this capacity was truly peacemaster, for often when his neighbors came to him with complaints to settle, he advised them how to settle their troubles by telling them what the law was on the subject, and when he could induce them to settle without legal, he charged nothing for his services. Town meetings were held at his home for many years..

Foster was also included in Scituate, and he did considerable business for people in Foster.

The property of Jeremiah Angell was divided unequally among his children. Jonathan Angell, son of Joseph, and grandson of Jeremiah, says his grandfather "disposed of his property to his children strickly in accordance with the old English custom, giving to Andrew, his oldest son living, his house and farm undivided, and giving to all his other children the remainder of his property. The home farm, given to Andrew, consisted of four hundred and twelve acres, with the tavern house and other buildings and improvements. The farm given to his son Job, in West Greewich, cost $160. The farm in Foster, given to Joseph, was also purchased for the same price. (other property was given, as well as good furniture and provisions to his daughters it was said his daughters were well provided for). Locations of graves were discussed in this book-buried in old meeting house lot with his three wives.

His oldest sons Jeremiah and Stephen went to sea and eventually were never heard from again. Some debated later whether these two sons existed. But Amy Angell, daughter of Richard and second cousin to these two men, gave an account of them to her son Job, who wrote this down in genealogy in a manuscript which is in possession of the author Avery F. Angell. ( 1870's) Jeremiah is listed in Colonial Records of Rhode Island, Volume 5, pages 487-8. It says that Jeremiah Angell and Jeremiah Angell Jr. took oath of freeman....on the first Wednesday in May 1736.

Jeremiah Angell (1707-85) served as a magistrate and town treasurer. He lived and died in Scituate, and the "Angell Tavern" was a meeting place of the Patriots, and where Washington and Lafayette were entertained
