John Roberts (born as John Cocking) was born 1791 in Headon, Nottinghamshire, England to John Cocking (c1761-) and Sarah Outram (1761-1847) and died 23 November 1859 Evans Bay, New Zealand of unspecified causes.

Arrived in Sydney via Hobart on the ship "Margaret" 364 tons, with his wife Anna Maria, his 4 children, his brother Robert (who had also changed his surname from Cocking to Roberts), and Robert's wife Mary Chatterham.

Arrived Wellington, New Zealand 4 December 1839. Left his wife and children behind in Australia. Purchased property & ran a business as a licensed victualler.

  • John made 2 wills - one in Australia to provide for Anna Maria and left his 2 sons, Peter and Charles Henry as executors. The NZ will left 2 blocks of land for each son. The will was signed "John Roberts otherwise Robert Jenkins. His death was registered under the name of Robert Jenkins.
