Obituary

Mr. John Cramsie, an old identity of this State, died at Randwick, on the 18th inst., at the age of 78 years, after a long illness, was buried at Waverley Cemetery. He came out to Australia when 26 years of age, and went to Swan Hill, Victoria, for some time then started storekeeping at Balranald, New South Wales. After being there some years his business increased so rapidly that he took into partnership Mr. John C. Bowden, of Melbourne, and traded under the name of Cramsie, Bowden, and Co. They then opened business at Hay, Euston, Wilcannia, Milparinka, Mount Brown, Tibooburra, Echuca, Melbourne, and Sydney. They also had a fleet of 13 steamers and barges trading on the Murrumbidgee, Murray, Darling, and Edwards rivers, and employed, in all, close on 1000 hands in the wool season. For about nine years Mr. Cramsie represented Riverina in this State's Parliament, at that time the largest constituency in New South Wales, being 300 miles to the farthest polling place. Mr. Cramsie at one time was largely interested in squatting, owning, and being interested in Strathdarr (Queensland), Tibbereenah, Kilfera, Glendon, and other properties. Mr. Cramsie was a widower, and left a grown-up family of eight, six sons and two daughters, viz., William A. and James R. (of Glen Innes), John B. (of Moree), Alexander S. (of Bulyeroi), Charles and Reginald (of Narrabri), Mrs. R. D. Wallace (of Singleton), and Sister Mary Joseph (of Hay).
