Biography

John Daniel Holladay was born 22 June 1826 in Moscow, Marengo County, Alabama, United States to John Holladay (1798-1862) and Catherine Beasley Higgins (1797-1877) and died 16 September 1909 Santaquin, Utah County, Utah, United States of unspecified causes. He married Mahalia Ann Rebecca Matthews (1833-1916) 2 November 1848 in Holladay, Salt Lake County, Utah.

Mississippi Saints 1846 Pioneer Company

Numbered amoung the participants in the Mississippi Saints 1846 Pioneer Company, a early Mormon pioneer wagon train that left Mississippi in 1846 to join the Mormon exodus to Utah. This group Brigham Young's vanguard company and spent the winter of 1846/47 at Fort Pueblo where the were joined by soldiers of the sick detachment of the Mormon Battalion. They reached Salt Lake City in late summer of 1847.

1847- He traveled with the Mississippi Company only until Pueblo, Colorado, then returned home "to close up his father's business". But made it back to Salt Lake City in time to get married the following year.

Willard Richards 1848 Pioneer Company

Numbered amoung the participants in the Willard Richards 1848 Pioneer Company, a early Mormon pioneer wagon train that left with about 526 individuals when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Winter Quarters, Nebraska. This company was divided into two sections, Willard Richards (1804-1854) section and Amasa Lyman Section. The Lyman section left the outfitting post on 1 July and the Richards section left on 3 July. Members of the company arrived in Salt Lake City from 10-19 October 1848.

John was part of a small group of saints from Mississippi that followed John Brown (1820-1896) and William Crosby (1808-1880) upto Winters Quarters.

Future wife, Mahalia Ann Rebecca Matthews (1833-1916), (also from Mississippi) initially traveled to the Valley with her parents in 1848. Her future husband, John D. Holladay, was also in the company. They were married not long after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on October 28, 1848. The moved to San Bernardino, California sometime before 1851, where their first child was born. They remained there until returning in the winter of 1857-1858.
