John Hilder was born 8 October 1825 in Mountfield, East Sussex, England to John Gilbert (1802-1875) and Hannah Hilder (1802) and died 4 November 1886 Leichhardt, New South Wales, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Elizabeth Dunk (1832-1886) 27 April 1850 in Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia.
He arrived in Australia in 1841 on the Marquis of Hastings.
