John Hughan was born 1830 in Kirkmabreck, Scotland to Gordon Hughan (1804-1881) and Mary McNay (1797-1874) and died 1 February 1908 Perth, Western Australia, Australia of unspecified causes. He married Christina Hughan (c1828-1867) March 1851 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.
John's first child Janet Law Hughan was born in Liverpool, England, on 7 June 1851 and died the same day. Janet Law Hughan was named after her maternal grandmother Janet Law. His next daughter, Mary McNay Hughan, born in Eastern Hill, Melbourne, Victoria in 1856 was named after her paternal grandmother Mary McNay.
John is shown in the 1851 census in Liverpool, England as aged 21, born in Kirkmabreck, Scotland, and a mill sawyer. His wife Christina is shown as 23 and born Kirkcowen, Scotland.
John, with his father Gordon and brother David sailed from Liverpool, bound for Melbourne in the “Charles Fox Bennett”. The ship was wrecked[1] on 18 Nov 1853 at Augusta, Western Australia. How they proceeded to Melbourne is not known but they arrived in January 1854 in time to meet the “Boomerang” on which his mother and other siblings were travelling to Melbourne.
John's second child Gordon was born in Liverpool, England on 13 Sep 1852. He was named after his paternal grandfather. The naming of John's subsequent sons broke with the Scottish naming tradition with his second son being named Alexander after his paternal great-grandfather, and it was not until the birth of his third son that the maternal grandfather's name of Thomas was used, and then only as a middle name.
John's wife Christina, stated age 27, arrived in Melbourne with their son Gordon, 2, on 22 Apr 1855 aboard the “Gambia” from Liverpool. She may have been accompanied by her younger sister Grace Hughan, stated age 24, or else the Grace Hughan also on the ship was a different Grace Hughan entirely. Christina was described as English even though the only one who had been born in England was little John's parents and sibling all immigrated from Melbourne to New Zealand on the “Gil Blas” arriving in Otago on 28 Nov 1855. They are described in the newspaper[2] as "Mr & Mrs Highan(sic), 4 sons and 3 daughters" even though their daughter Christina was already married. John, however, remained in Victoria with his wife and children.
